• Strontium Chloride • Sodium Carbonate • Cupric Sulfate
• Potassium Chloride • Cupric Chloride

The volume of the chemicals in this flame test kit permits repetitive use, classroom or otherwise. When burned, the metal or metalloid ion in each chemical imparts a characteristic color to the flame. Thus, this kit can be used to demonstrate the “flame test” method of identifying minerals. The chemicals are packaged in 100 gram poly bottles.

IMPORTANT! Shipping is restricted. Chemicals are hazardous. Ships to destinations within the 48 contiguous US states and Canada using Standard Ground. No air deliveries allowed. (No AK, HI or PR)

To perform the test, place a powdered sample of the chemical (see list below) on a nichrome wire, as in an inoculating loop and place in the hottest portion of the flame.

Note that the wire should be well cleaned by dipping in alcohol between samples so no dust etc. interferes with the true color in the test sample flame. Stainless steel spatulas can also be used.

SAFETY: Wear chemical splash goggles, a lab chemical apron and youths should perform under supervision.

To test an unknown mineral, compare its observed flame color with the known values from such as the list below:

Flame Color Chemical (kit contains 10 grams each)
RED Strontium Chloride
YELLOW Sodium Carbonate
GREEN Cupric Sulfate
VIOLET Potassium Chloride
BLUE Cupric Chloride

  • “SALTS” – Above chemicals are categorized chemically as salts, ionic compounds produced by reacting an acid with a base.
  • METALOID ION – Resembles a metal; a non-metal which can combine with a metal to form an alloy.

For chemical quality assurance our chemicals are "factory fresh" from qualified industrial chemical suppliers. To ensure top quality we CANNOT ACCEPT RETURNS on chemical purchases, even if the container is unopened.

Chemicals with hazard fees are limited to the 48 contiguous U.S. states. Ground-only (No-Fly) chemicals are limited to the 48 contiguous U.S. states and Canada.
