Bulk Flame Test Chemical Kit With Five Chemicals
• Strontium Chloride • Sodium Carbonate • Cupric Sulfate
• Potassium Chloride • Cupric Chloride
The chemicals in this flame test kit come in 100 gram poly bottles, making them ideal for repeated use in the classroom or other settings. When burned, each chemical produces a characteristic color, which can be used to identify minerals.
IMPORTANT! Shipping is restricted. Chemicals are hazardous. Ships to destinations within the 48 contiguous US states and Canada using Standard Ground. No air deliveries allowed. (No AK, HI or PR)
To perform the test, place a powdered sample of the chemical (see list below) on a nichrome wire, like an inoculating loop and place in the hottest part of the flame.
Note that the wire should be well cleaned by dipping in alcohol between samples so no dust or impurities interfere with the true color in the test sample flame. Stainless steel spatulas can also be used.
SAFETY: Wear chemical splash goggles and a lab chemical apron. Youths should perform under supervision.
To test an unknown mineral, compare its observed flame color with the known values from such as the list below:
Flame Color | Chemical (kit contains 10 grams each) |
RED | Strontium Chloride Get MSDS |
YELLOW | Sodium Carbonate Get MSDS |
GREEN | Cupric Sulfate Get MSDS |
VIOLET | Potassium Chloride Get SDS |
BLUE | Cupric Chloride Get MSDS |
